Calicut

Calicut, a cosmopolitan city and the hub of all trade and tourism activities of the Malabar region of North Kerala. The historical importance of Calicut (Kozhikode) is noted with the arrival of the first European navigator Vasco-da-Gama here in 1498. The glorious sunset at the Calicut beach is bound to refresh you after a hectic day.


Mananchira

Calicut city’s most beautiul place is the Mananchira and the Mananchira square around it. The park and the musical fountain in the square are the main tourist attractions in the city. The Mananchira is situated in the heart of the city where important institutions like the Town Hall, Public Library and the Calicut’s oldest building, the Common Wealth Trust Office are located.

Pazhassiraja museum

The museum situated at East hill, Calicut,is run by state archaeological department. The museum exhibits antique bronzes, ancient mural paintings, old coins, models of temples and megalithic, monuments like umbrella stones and dolomite cysts.


Planetarium

The planetarium was started in the year 1996.Situated very near to Indira Gandhi road. The main purpose of the planetarium is to give awareness about the universe to the publics. Light and sound programs are shown every day here.

Calicut Beach

Beach at Calicut was very famous in the olden times itself. As Calicut was the main hub of trade in olden days, ships of Arabs and Portuguese were anchored here. Two bridges and a light house stand testimony to these historic facts. The lion’s park is an attraction of the Calicut beach.

Beypore

Beypore is a small coastal town situated 11 KMs from Calicut. Beypore is famous for “URU”.Traditional ship builders known as Khalasis build country crafts called “Uru”. It was here Cheraman Perumal built an Uru in the sixth century to visit Arabia.

Kappad

Kappad is located 15 kms from Calicut. On 27th may 1498 AD Vasco-Da-Gama set foot on the sands of Kappad Beach. A monument was constructed at the beach to commemorate the landing.

Thusharagiri Water falls

It is one of most beautiful waterfalls in Wayanad. Identified as a tourist centre recently, the waterfalls and streams in this hilly region are really a feast for the eyes.

Wayanad Wild life Sanctuary

Wayanad is famous for its wild life sanctuary which attracts lots of visitors. Pookodu lake, Soochipara Water Falls, Muthanga Forest etc are also nearby.

Pakshippathalam

This place can be accessed only by trekking. Rare species of birds can be sighted from the watchtower of this bird sanctuary.

Kuruvadweep

This 950-acre, uninhabited island on the eastward bound Kabani River is an ideal picnic spot. The wooded stretch of land is home to rare species of birds, orchids and herbs.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary has a wide variety of animals. Visiting time: 0600 – 0800 hrs and 1500 -1730 hrs.

Chembra peak

At 2100 m above mean sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad and is an ideal area for trekking.

Banasura Project, Padinjarathara

A mini hydel project with the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia is built here. A sprawling sanctuary and park with ever flowering trees are major tourist attractions.

Meenmutty Waterfalls

An interesting 2 km jungle trek of the main Ootty road, Meenmutty is the largest most spectacular water fall in Wayanad. A unique feature is that water drops about 300 m over three stages.

Kanthanpara Waterfalls

An interesting 2 km jungle trek of the main Ootty road, Meenmutty is the largest most spectacular water fall in Smaller than sentinel rock, Kanthanpara and it’s surroundings make for an ideal picnic spot.

 

Sentinel Rock Waterfalls

Sentinel Rock locally known as soochipara, the pool at the foot of the falls is ideal for a quick dip. The more restrained can have equally good fun just taking in the scenery.

Lakkidi

Pookot Lake

This perennial fresh water lake, nestled among wooded hills, is the only one of its kind in Kerala. Boating facilities, a children’s park, a handicrafts and spices emporium and a fresh water aquarium are among the tourist facilities available here.
